Wildfires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes — disasters move fast, and the pieces that matter most to you deserve a plan before one strikes. A little preparation now, knowing where your valuables are, how they're documented, and what your policy covers, can make all the difference if you ever need to evacuate or file a claim. Here are some simple steps to help keep your jewelry safe, no matter what comes your way.

1. Store it securely

Standard jewelry boxes can be easily damaged or stolen, and the wrong spot in your home can turn a disaster into a total loss.

  • Keep items in a heavy, fireproof, and waterproof safe bolted to the floor above potential flood levels, or in an off-site safety deposit box.
  • Avoid storing irreplaceable items in basements, attics, or garages prone to flooding and leaks.
  • Place individual pieces of jewelry in soft pouches or travel rolls sealed inside secondary waterproof containers.

2. Document everything and know your coverage

  • Take clear photographs and keep written descriptions, receipts, and appraisals backed up in a secure digital cloud or off-site location.
  • Check your policy details before you need them. Standard homeowners or renters insurance often sets low limits for jewelry and may only cover certain situations.
  • Consider specialized jewelry insurance for broader protection against theft, loss, and accidental damage, with coverage designed for your high-value or one-of-a-kind pieces.

3. Have an evacuation plan

When an evacuation order comes, there's no time to think; so decide now what you'll grab and how you'll handle it once you're out the door.

  • Grab your pre-backed digital inventories, appraisals, and only your most sentimental or irreplaceable wearable pieces if time permits.
  • Avoid leaving valuables in hot cars, beach bags, or unsecured luggage, where they face a high risk of loss or damage in transit.
  • If damage or loss occurs contact your insurer right away with written statements and proof of ownership to start the claims process
  • Never return to a damaged home or attempt to retrieve items until local authorities declare the area completely safe.

Planning now helps protect your most treasured pieces—and the memories they hold. For added protection, explore specialized jewelry insurance designed to help protect engagement rings, wedding bands, and other meaningful pieces with coverage that fits your life.
