National Broadcast Spotlight: Jewelers Mutual experts talk jewelry protection when traveling

Jewelers Mutual brought findings from its 2026 Travel Study to a national audience, appearing on TV and radio broadcasts across top markets to raise consumer awareness about protecting jewelry while traveling.

The segments featured Emili Vesilind, Editor-in-Chief of Gem + Jewel™ Magazine, and Mark Smelzer, consumer advocate at Jewelers Mutual. Together, they discussed practical guidance for travelers, including what jewelry to pack (and what to leave at home), where jewelry is most commonly lost or stolen while on trips, and why standard homeowners and renters insurance often doesn’t provide adequate coverage for jewelry.

The conversation was grounded in key findings from Jewelers Mutual’s Travel Study, including:

  • Nearly half (47%) of travelers who have had jewelry stolen while traveling experienced theft more than once.
  • Almost 1 in 4 hotel jewelry losses stem from room safe malfunctions.
  • More than half of respondents lost or had jewelry stolen while wearing it.
  • 40% of those surveyed reported buying new jewelry while on vacation.
